In an interview with Deadline magazine, Julia Roberts said that when her agent first told her about the romantic comedy, she thought the idea sounded silly.

In the film, Julia Roberts plays a top-tier Hollywood star who falls in love with a bookstore owner, portrayed by Hugh Grant, while trying to keep a low profile in London.

“‘I’m going to play the biggest movie star in the world and then what do I do?’ ‘And what happens next?’” she recalled thinking.

She said she changed her mind after reading the script by Richard Curtis. “Then I read the script and thought, ‘Oh. This is so charming. It’s so funny,’” she remembered.

“And then I went to lunch with Richard [Curtis], the [producer] Duncan [Kenworthy], and the dear [director] Roger Michell, may he rest in peace,” said the actress, explaining that she intended to turn down the role at that meeting.

“And they were just so charming, sweet, and funny. And I thought, ‘Wow, this is really going to happen.’”

Julia Roberts recalled her experience filming “Notting Hill” with great affection. She said she had a wonderful time making the movie.

“It was so amazing. We had such a beautiful time. And I think Roger simply made the film in a way that, at every step, it worked. He achieved his goals,” she said.
